My objective is to be able to read Afrikaans relatively fluently by september.
Learn 1000 words in memrise, and read the first quarter of Kobra in Afrikaans.
I've deliberately set myself a hard goal to kickstart my Afrikaans learning, and it will be interesting to see how far I get during the month.
Reading in this instance does not mean understanding every word, or even every paragraph but to be able to follow the story. I'm going to need to fairly hight tolerance of uncertainty to achieve this as my Afrikaans vocabulary is currently small.
The 1000 Afrikaans words in memrise is achievable partly because I can use it constantly - waiting for a bus, the kettle to boil and so on, and partly because many Afrikaans words have similarities with the English. I'm also aiming to understand rather than reproduce vocabulary which is a much quicker process.
